Pressure pipelines can suffer from high and low tranisent pressures when flows and pressures change rapidly.
The most common method of evaluating these pressures is to perform a hydraulic study is to use one of the many commercially available software titles such as;

The use of these programmes must be combined with experience and knowledge as many systems have peculiarities which are not always easily represented within the software packages.
